Meaning “farewell” Paolo in English. Paolo was my best friend as a child and that’s the last thing I said to him and my mother and I were driven to a plane early one morning having learned of my grandfather’s death the night before. I left the Alps that morning on a military plane headed to Maxwell Air Force base in Montgomery Alabama never to return.
Apart from the past five years my adult life has been spent in mountains and wilderness in places like Alberta, Wyoming, and Colorado. I gravitated here because I spent my childhood at the edge of one of the most beautiful mountain ranges in the world, the Dolomites of Northern Italy. In a North American kind of way I was returning home to mountains best I could.

Recently I was allowed to review several hundred Ozark Police Department interviews with witnesses from the investigation into the murders of J.B. Beasley and Tracie Hawlett. I then photographed the places in Dale county where investigators believe they were the last hour before their death. Included is a photo of the interviews identifying places with the names of witnesses redacted.

Below is an example of my workflow after someone requested by email. I have purposely chosen a bad photograph of a closed restaurant, so know this ahead of time. My process is used on an iPad mostly and occasionally on my laptop. Most of my work is done from the cab of my truck so I only use Adobe ’s Lightroom and Photoshop software.

I used to have a job where almost everyday I stopped in and saw these guys that operated a mine in a little valley called Maggie gulch just outside Silverton Colorado.
The tales they could tell.

For years I have used photographs to illustrate ideas—realization: major shortcoming linked to architectural education.
I’ve failed to listen to what images tell me and the experience of the moment.
I stepped back, tried to see what stands out to me, and noticed I do not often take photographs of urban landscapes or cities. There is little interest in landmarks or things considered notable.
Instead I’m drawn to out-of-the-way diners or country stores where human connection happens most. The places where everyday memories occur.
Cultural landscapes that form our identity. An aesthetic about connection, not politics or what wealth can buy. These subtle, often overlooked places that bind us together as Americans.

“If we see the present clearly enough, we shall ask the right questions of the past”. Below are links to a few documentary films I reccomend illustrating the limitations of our justice system. In the case of Recy Taylor I had the priviledge of getting to know her at the Henry County Nursing home before her death.
